This project was created as part of the Pacific Dataviz Challenge 2025 to visualize progress toward Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14.5.1. This indicator measures the proportion of marine Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) covered by protected areas and/or Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures (OECMs). The theme for this year’s challenge, “Blue Pacific 2050”, highlights the long-term regional strategy for sustainable ocean management and collaboration across the Pacific. The 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent is deeply rooted in the connection Pacific peoples have with their land and ocean.
SDG 14 focuses on the conservation and sustainable use of oceans, seas, and marine resources. Indicator 14.5.1 tracks the percentage of marine areas under protection, a critical factor in preserving biodiversity, supporting climate resilience, and securing sustainable livelihoods for coastal communities. This visualization explores how the coverage of protected marine areas has changed over time throughout the Pacific region.

This indicator tracks the proportion of marine and coastal areas under protection. It helps assess how effectively countries safeguard biodiversity and ecosystems in oceans and seas. The objective is to promote sustainable use of marine resources by establishing and maintaining effective marine protected areas.
Palau had the highest proportion of marine KBAs under protection as of 2019.
